14 Facts about Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard is performing tracks from his latest album as part of his Just Fabulous Rock 'n' Roll tour on Thursday 29th June.

Here are 14 facts you may or may not have already known about Cliff Richard!

  • Cliff Richard entered the music industry in the late 1950s when he became the lead singer of a rock and roll group The Drifters (not to be confused with the US group of the same name).
  • Cliff’s real name is Harry Rodger Webb - he based his stage name on his hero Little Richard.
  • One of the first songs Cliff recorded was Move It which went to number 2 in the UK charts and was later named as “the first British rock record” by John Lennon.
  • After The Drifters, Cliff’s famed backing band was The Shadows, who joined him on his single Living Doll which was his first number 1 single.
  • During his 59 years in the music industry he has released 97 Top 20 singles, 14 of which hit Number 1.
  • He has released 43 solo albums in the UK - 28 of which went to Top 10 in the charts.
  • He has also released 24 video albums, 22 of which have charted in the Top 5.
  • Since 1958 Cliff has received more than 80 different awards including Brit awards and Ivor Novello awards.
  • Cliff has given away at least a 10th of his income to charity since 1966 and, in 1990, he said: “Those of us who have something to offer have to be prepared to give all the time.”
  • Cliff has also starred in multiple films including The Young Ones, Summer Holiday, Wonderful Life and more.
  • Cliff has collaborated with many big artists including Cilla Black, Olivia Newton John, Hank Marvin, Janet Jackson, Elton John, Van Morrison and many more.
  • In 2008 Cliff reunited with The Shadows and performed at the Royal Variety Performance. They also followed up the performance with a Golden Anniversary concert tour of the UK.
  • To celebrate his 70th birthday Cliff performed a series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in late 2010.
  • Cliff’s latest album Just... Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll and was released in November 2016 and peaked at number 4 in the UK charts.
