14 Facts about The Jacksons

The next artist we're introducing is a very special one, celebrating 50 years in the Music Industry: The Jacksons, who are performing on Saturday 17th June.

Here are 14 facts that you may or may not know about The Jacksons.

  • The Jacksons are Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon Jackson.
  • The band – formed in the 1960s as the Jackson Brothers with their late brother Michael – are this year celebrating their 50th anniversary in the music industry.
  • In November 1967, the band signed their first record deal with Steeltown Records but were then signed to Motown Records by early 1969.
  • Just before recording their first single ‘Want You Back’ the band performed as an opening act for The Supremes.
  • The Jacksons’ first TV appearance was in September 1969 where they appeared on Miss Black American Pageant performing ‘It’s Your Thing’.
  • In January 1970 ‘Want You Back’ topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was not only the group’s first single but their first number 1 too.
  • The Jacksons’ next three singles followed the trend and went to number 1 in the US.
  • After the release of four albums within one year, The Jackson 5 (their recording name during their Motown days) replaced The Supremes as Motown’s best-selling group.
  • In 1972 and ‘73 the band had their own cartoon series on Saturday mornings called Jackson 5ive, although none of the characters were actually voiced by the brothers as they were too busy with their music.
  • The band’s songs ABC and Want You Back are featuring on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll’.
  • In September 2011, the Jackson brothers reunited for performances at Madison Square Garden to commemorate Michael Jackson’s solo career.
  • To date, The Jacksons have released 16 studio albums, nine of which have gone to the top 20 of the charts.
  • The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.
  • The Jacksons’ concert at Scarborough Open Air Theatre on June 17th is their first live appearance in Yorkshire since February 13th, 1979, when they played in Sheffield during their Destiny World Tour.
