14 Facts about The Charlatans

Here are 14 facts you may or may not already know about The Charlatans.

  • The Charlatans are made up of lead vocalist Tim Burgess, guitarist Mark Collins, bassist Martin Blunt and keyboardist Tony Rogers.
 
  • Although part of the famed Manchester indie scene, the band was originally formed in the West Midlands. Their North West connection can be traced to Moulton, near Northwich, Cheshire, where Salford-born frontman Burgess grew up.
 
  • The Charlatans had their own record label called Dead Dead Good Records on which they released their debut single “Indian Rope”.
 
  • The band have had three number 1 albums in the UK including their debut album Some Friendly, The Charlatans and Tellin’ Stories.
 
  • They have also had twelve top 20 singles in the UK between 1990 and 2006.
 
  • Following the release of their six album and first compilation album Melting Pot, the band left their label Beggars Banquet and signed for Universal Records.
 
  • After joining Universal Records The Charlatans took on a new sound and then released their next album Us and Us Only which was heavily influenced by Tim Burgess’ love of Bob Dylan.
 
  • In mid-2007 the band made big live appearances on tour with The Who and The Rolling Stones performing in Wembley and Twickenham stadiums.
 
  • The Charlatans took a stand against racism in 2007 by recording a song for the Love Music, Hate Racism compilation album released with NME magazine, the song was called “Blank Heart, Blank Mind”.
 
  • As the millennial era begun, the band led the way in the digital age by giving away their tenth studio album ‘You Cross My Path’ as a free download through XFM radio.
 
  • In 2011 Tim Burgess and Mark Collins took part in an acoustic tour across the UK to coincide with the release of their latest EP Warm Sounds.
 
  • The band became strongly associated with ‘Madchester’ when their music became influenced by the latest “baggy” sound and they started supporting The Stone Roses.
 
  • Burgess has written two books - Telling Stories (2013) and the 2016 follow up Tim: Book Two: Vinyl Adventures from Istanbul to San Francisco.
 
  • The Charlatans release their 13th studio album Different Days on May 26th - the follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed Modern Nature.
