14 Facts about The Beach Boys

The next artist we're introducing is our first show this year: The Beach Boys, who are performing on Wednesday 24th May.

Here are 14 facts you may or may not know about The Beach Boys!

  • The Beach Boys formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California.
 
  • The band is currently made up of: Mike Love, Bruce Johnston,  Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Eichenburger, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill and Scott Totten.
 
  • The Beach Boys have won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and have been nominated for six others.
 
  • The band have released 29 studio albums between 1962 and 2012 and also 8 live albums.
 
  • They have had 71 singles, 25 of which went top 20 in the US.
 
  • Out of the 29 singles released in the UK, eleven went top 10, including six in the top 3.
 
  • In 2004, the band were ranked number 14 in the Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list.
 
  • The original 5 members - Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
 
  • Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson were all brothers in their teens, David Marks was their neighbour, Mike Love is the Wilsons’ cousin and Al Jardine was Brian’s High School classmate.
 
  • The Beach Boys were actually originally called The Pendletones which was a play on words combining a ‘Pendleton’ which was a popular shirt and ‘tone’ in music.
 
  • The band themselves had nothing to do with the name change to The Beach Boys, this was done by their labels at the time who changed it before the release of their first single.
 
  • Despite many of their songs being surfing related, Dennis was the only member who was an avid surfer.
 
  • Despite competition from The Beatles, The Beach Boys gained their first number 1 with “I Get Around” in May 1964 followed by a number 4 album two months later.
 
  • July 1985 was a big month of shows for The Beach Boys as on July 4th they performed in front of an afternoon crowd of 1 million people and an evening crowd of 750,000 people. They also then performed at Live Aid.
