14 Facts about Kaiser Chiefs

Our first Artist that we are going to introduce you to is Kaiser Chiefs, who are playing on Saturday 27th May.

Here are 14 Facts that you may or may not know about Kaiser Chiefs!

  •  The band is made up of: Ricky Wilson, Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines and Vijay Mistry. 
 
  • Nick Hodgson was previously the drummer but left the band in late 2012 but was replaced by Vijay in 2013.
 
  • The band was originally called Parva between 2000 and 2003; they would sing songs about High School in America to try and be commercial. 
 
  • They got their current name from the South African football club ‘Kaizer Chiefs’ which was the first club of former Leeds United Captain, Lucas Radebe.
 
  • The band broke through in 2005 when they opened the NME Awards Tour and Live 8 in Philadelphia, where the line up also included: Will Smith, Kanye West, Destiny's Child, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder. 
 
  • All six of their studio albums have gone top 10 in the UK, including two number 1’s, two multi-platinum sellers and two gold sellers.
 
  • The band’s debut album Employment went multi-platinum in the UK with 2,079,224 sales, it also went multi-platinum in the EU and gold in Australia.
 
  • They have seven top 20 singles in the UK including Ruby which went to number 1 and also went platinum.
 
  • Kaiser Chiefs won three Brit Awards, all in 2006, for Best British Group, Best British Rock Act and Best British Live Act, they were also nominated for four other Brit Awards.
 
  • Frontman Ricky Wilson has also ventured into acting, making appearances in St Trinians 2 and also Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
 
  • The band members originate from Leeds and are all big Leeds United supporters.
 
  • Kaiser Chiefs are playing more than 20 shows this summer.
 
  • Keyboardist Nick Baines’ nickname is ‘Peanut’ which he has had since age 10.
 
  • Kaiser Chiefs’ pre-show ritual involves listening to Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al”.
